Permalok® HDD Joint Featured in Trenchless Technology’s 2025 Project of the Year
Trenchless Technology Magazine has named the Champlain Hudson Power Express (CHPE) Terrestrial Trenchless Crossings its 2025 Project of the Year – New Installation, recognizing the project’s scale, complexity, and innovative execution. Designed and led by general contractor Kiewit Infrastructure, the landmark renewable energy project included the first-ever use of Permalok® HDD pipe to complete a major horizontal directional drill beneath New York City’s East River.
For this final segment of the 339-mile transmission line, Northwest Pipe Company supplied more than 10,000 feet of 20-inch steel casing pipe featuring the patented Permalok® HDD Joint. Installed by trenchless subcontractor Michels Corporation, the dual 5,100-foot HDD crossing represented a record-length push installation using a weld-free, press-fit joint connection. By using 170 thirty-foot segments cartridge-loaded from the rig side, the Permalok® HDD Joint eliminated field welding and long pipe string-outs, allowing the crew to complete the crossing efficiently despite space limitations in the congested urban environment.
Northwest Pipe Company is proud to have partnered as a supplier on this challenging project and extends congratulations to Kiewit, Michels, and the entire CHPE project team on this well-deserved recognition.
