About the Job

The Precast Cost Accounting Manager will manage the day to day cost accounting function for the precast segment as well as supervising the precast cost accounting team.  This role will prepare and direct the implementation of cost accounting methods and activities over the precast segment.  In addition, the Precast Cost Accounting Manager will oversee cost reporting and analysis to plant and executive management.  This role includes responsibilities in the areas of cost accounting, controls, expense management, policy and procedure development, and internal and external audit support.

Essential Functions & Major Responsibilities
  • Manage precast cost accounting functions at Northwest Pipe Company, including supervising a team of cost accountants.
  • Review journal entries, account reconciliations, and other work product completed by the precast cost accounting team.
  • Take ownership of the monthly close process for areas managed to ensure that work is completed timely and reviewed for accuracy, with review appropriately documented.
  • Provide detailed monthly review and analysis of financial performance for all precast plant locations.
  • Monitor and analyze product margins to assist precast management in decision making and pricing changes.
  • Participate in and guide precast cost accounting group in forecasting and budgeting for the precast plants.
  • Review, analyze, and if necessary, develop costing standards for materials and labor as well as guide precast plant management in regards to costing methods and appropriate overhead rates.
  • Assist precast cost accountants in analyzing standard to actual production costs/variances and recommending changes.
  • Review, reconciliation, and maintenance of the perpetual inventory system at the precast plants.
  • As requested by the Director of FP&A, research, document, and prepare accounting entries for non-routine transactions.
  • Support annual external audit and quarterly reviews through preparation and review of audit schedules and information provided to auditors.
  • Coordinate with financial reporting staff to provide timely and accurate information for inclusion in external financial reporting.
  • Understand internal control procedures related to areas managed, and participate in controls documentation, evaluation, and testing.
  • Perform selected internal control procedures and document performance.
  • Streamline and document department processes and procedures with the objective of following lean principles while also maintaining strong internal controls.
  • Develop and refine accounting policies and procedures as appropriate.
  • Establish challenging goals, direct actions to achieve goals, coach and develop staff.
  • Specific areas of accounting associated with the position and cost accounting staff may include: general ledger; revenue recognition; deferred revenue; and inventory, including standard to actual costing, LCRNV analysis and annual physical inventory counts.
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, plus at least 5 years of relevant work experience.
  • Supervisory experience preferred.
  • Experience in the application of GAAP and an understanding of internal controls.
  • Experience with the monthly accounting close process.
  • Experience working with SAP or other major enterprise-wide application.
